DIY picture frame crafts are always a great way to save and cherish memories, and wall art is an integral part of every room of your home. If you’r looking for picture frame craft idea but don’t know where to start, this is the perfect place for you.

Family, Baby, & Nusery

This can be a multipurpose DIY project. Here are some occasions and places you may consider crafting for:

  • Baby Shower
  • Gender Reveal Party
  • Nursery
  • Classroom
  • Birthday Party
  • Marriage (paint a puzzle piece for you and your spouse, adding on a new puzzle piece for every new member of the family)

Dinosaurs & Tulips

We chose to have one puzzle piece in the middle with our own wedding photo, and two adjacent puzzle pieces for a boy (dinosaurs) and girl (tulips). But there are a lot of other ways this can be done. Maybe cars and kittens, or super heroes and ponies. The possibilities are many! This is your opportunity to make this project your own. But, of course, feel free to stick with the dinosaurs and tulips. They’re always winners. 🙂 Let’s get started!

  • Cardboard or newspaper (to keep your space clean)
  • Paint brush of choice

Picture frame craft: Step-by-step

1. Remove Picture Holders

Each individual frame contains a plastic picture holder in the middle. Remove this so you don’t get paint on it. We bought our frames at our local dollar store. Wherever you get them, make sure the plastic in the middle can be easily removed. If you can’t remove the plastic holder, place some masking tape around the boarder to keep it clean during the painting process.

2. Begin Painting

Once you’ve decided on your base color, give the puzzle piece frame two generous coats of paint on the front of the frame. Let each coat dry before moving on to the next. Leave the back and sides unpainted. The sides need to be left unpainted since the pieces will later be connected anyhow, and the paint will rub off if they’re a tight fit.

We chose a very light pink paint for our girl puzzle piece, as it would contrast well with the colors of the tulips.

For the boy, we chose green to be the base for the dinosaurs.

3. Personalize

After both coats of paint are completely dry, add a personal design on each puzzle piece. Customize according to the person who will be featured in that frame. If your son loves airplanes, paint airplanes. If your daughter loves puppies, paint puppies etc.

The customization is what makes this project so fun! You never know what this collection of puzzle pieces will look like in 10 years! It could be a five piece puzzle featuring interests unique to each child, with mom and dad in the middle.

For the centerpiece, make it a reflection of you and your spouse. You can write your names and anniversary date on it, or customize in a way that shows your unique personalities as a couple.

4. Put Plastic Picture Holders Back in

Once you’ve customized all of the puzzle pieces, and they’re completely dry, either put the plastic picture holders back in the frames or remove the masking tape if you chose that method instead.

5. Put Puzzles together & Enjoy your Picture Frame Craft!

Put your frames together, and you’re ready to hang them on your wall!

Conclusion

We hope you love the way your puzzle pieces have turned out! Regardless of the occasion, may this picture frame craft be a part of your home for years to come!!

With Warmth & Love
