Every Christmas, I fondly remember my late aunt’s spice cookies—their aroma and taste still linger in my mind. These treats have become a family favorite, and I’m thrilled to share them with you!

So for this Valentine’s Day, I thought, “Can these warm, festive cookies be adapted for this season of love?” So, here goes nothing: My Aunt’s Christmas Spice Cookies with a Valentine’s twist. Whether shaped like hearts, adorned with Valentine sprinkles, or decorated for another special holiday, these cookies are sure to become a favorite in your family.

Baking Together for Any Holiday

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 cup water
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup corn syrup
  • 4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 4 teaspoons ground cloves
  • 4 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda

Instructions:

Prepare the Spice Mixture:

  • Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture begins to boil.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine the water, sugar, corn syrup, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
  • Remove from heat and add the softened butter, stirring until fully melted and incorporated.
  • Allow the mixture to cool for 30 minutes.

Mix the Dough:

  • Stir in 4 cups of flour and the baking soda until the mixture is smooth.
  • Gradually add the remaining 4 cups of flour, mixing until a dough forms.
  • Divide the dough into manageable portions and roll each portion out on a floured surface to your desired thickness.

Cut and Bake:

. Preheat your oven to 350°F

. Using cookie cutters, cut the dough into your desired holiday-themed designs.

. Place the cut-out cookies onto ungreased baking sheets.

. While the oven is preheating, refrigerate the cookies to help them maintain their shape during baking.

. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are slightly golden brown.

Cool and Decorate:

. Allow the cookies to cool completely on a wire rack.
